This webinar was held on April 2, 2026.
This webinar provided an update to the ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in the United States. On February 8, 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) A H5N1 virus in a commercial poultry flock in the United States. Since then, USDA has worked swiftly with states and poultry producers to identify and respond to HPAI H5N1 detections. The outbreak of HPAI H5N1 has been widespread globally in wild and domesticated birds; sporadic H5N1 virus infections in mammals have also been reported across the continents of Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. Since late March 2024, USDA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state veterinary and public health officials have been responding to detections of H5N1 virus in dairy cows. This webinar provided a general update on HPAI, along with information pertinent to those within the exotic animal industry space. The live webinar was RACE-approved, open to everyone in the exotic animal industry, and counted as 1 continuing education credit hour.
Featured speakers included Dr. Steven Rekant and Dr. Kelly Helmick from USDA.
