Confirmation of COVID-19 in Hippos at a Belgian Zoo

On December 3, 2021,  representatives from Antwerp Zoo in Antwerp, Belgium announced that two of their hippos tested positive for COVID-19 after runny nasal discharge was observed in the animals. Results were confirmed by the Sciensano National Veterinary Laboratory in Belgium.

This is the first known confirmed case of COVID-19 in hippos, and the source of exposure to the virus is unknown. Runny nasal discharge is the thus far the only symptom that the hippos have been exhibiting.
